Knocking on your Green Roof

In keeping with the rise in green products and a general green way of life, the Sunday Times recently covered the issue of installing a green roof on your property.

The roof is constructed in a traditional manner, with additional support being essential. the green element of the roof is formed with a waterproof underlay, covered with soil or crushed stones, then coated with sedum mats or wild flowers.

The intention is not to create a picture perfect lawn for bowls, but more like wild grass. A roof such as this will improve sound & thermal insulation, as well as help absorb heavy rains during flash floods.

What is unclear is how much extra support it will take to support such a roof, hopefully not too many additional concrete beams or trees will be needed in it's construction. A normal flat roof can be expected to last anywhere between 10 to 15 years. A repair of traditional flat roofs is often possible, extending the life span of the roof. Repairs to a green roof will be extremely difficult, however as long as the support is sufficient and the drainage is good then a green roof is something that should be considered.

More details on the construction of such a roof is available Greenfix, a leading company in the field.
