Green Building Council
Zerochampion has tackled his first interview with Peter Rogers who is chairing the UK Green Building Council.
This relatively new coalition was formed with the intention of bringing together sectors of the industry to provide a more focused and driven approach to sustainable buildings.
The mission statement of the UK-GBC clearly states their intention:
'To dramatically reduce the environmental impact of buildings by radically improving the way they are designed, built and maintained.'
The challenge identified in the interview is the need to tackle the growing demand to use renewable energies within buildings. As Mr Rogers quite rightly points out, a massive difference can be made within the majority of the existing building stock by undertaking some relatively minor measures. Insulate your building, change you lightbulbs over (why do retailers still stock old bulbs?). Another point raised and one we have discussed on theses pages in the past, is the need to educate office users to turn off their lights and be less reliant on controlled environments.
UK-GBC already boasts a healthy list of companies who are joining the crusade. Whilst it is great to see such enthusiastic support, there are many green bodies in place already, each challenging themselves with helping the industry to turn green.
It is imperative that these numerous bodies deliver a co-ordinated and united message. The failure to do so will lead to a confused industry.
