Life After Sixty

A new analysis by Pension Capital Strategies revealed in the Saturday Times shows the assumptions made by companies on how long their workers will live after retiring.

The figures are just starting to surface due to the pressure companies have on disclosing their assumptions in their annual accounts when it comes to final salary pensions.

Whilst some variations between the different sectors can be put down to social classes and type of work undertaken, differences between sectors may be more to do with creative accounting.

Although the figures below seem quite grim, on average, every ten years we add another two years to our life expectancy.

Here is the role call - number of years men can expect to live after 60 based on industry sector:

Financial Services: 26.2

Aerospace: 26.1

Insurance: 25.3

Media: 25.0

Banks: 24.4

Retail: 23.6

Mining & materials:23.2

Construction & Materials: 22.4

Tobacco:21.6
