20,000 Migrant Workers Per Month


According to Home Office statistics ,the number of migrants from Eastern Europe seeking work in the UK rose last year, with more than 20,000 a month registering with the government.

The Accession Monitoring Report , draws on Work Registration Scheme statistics between May 2004 and December 2006, from nationals of the A8 countries (Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia)

It shows that100,000 Eastern Europeans registered for work in administration and business, 38,000 work in hospitality, and 19,700 are employers in agriculture.The statistics also show that 2,500 are bus, lorry and coach drivers, 1,000 are employed as doctors and nurses and 700 are working as teachers, researchers and classroom assistants.

The figures do not include the self-employed, estimated at 200,000.
