32 % Of Homeowners Look to DIY to Boost Value

According to new reports from Yorkshire Bank, 32 per cent of people hoping to sell their homes are planning to carry out a few DIY home improvements in a bid to boost the value of their property.

A quarter of those surveyed by the bank would ideally hire a professional to carry out improvements. It was also found that 14 per cent of people are prepared to remortgage their homes in order to generate the necessary finance for home improvements.

However research suggests that these efforts could be in vain, with a third of all buyers stating that they would completely redecorate once moving into a new home.

Commenting to Mortgageforbusiness.co.uk"Gary Lumby of Yorkshire Bank said, "DIY can help present a house in the best possible light when you’re trying to sell.............Unless you play it safe with neutral colours and simple, stylish fittings, your hard work could go to waste - new owners want to make their own mark,".

According to Moneyhighstreet.com, Halifax reports that 11 million UK homeowners plan to spend an estimated £153 billion on home improvement in the near future.

As a child we moved on average every 3 years throughout my child and teen life(My mum had the moving bug). A number of the houses had just been redecorated which reflects in the price as you pay more. Everyone was redecorated within 12 months of moving to the property to suit my mothers taste. The moral is that its better to buy a property that needs modernisation when you move than to have a freshly decorated house. Also decorating can hide a multitude of sins, especially wallpaper!!
