"Get Carter" landmark to be demolished

The Twentieth Century Society (C20) has lost its battle to save one of Britain’s most famous Brutalist masterpieces from the demolition. Trinity Square ,the controversial urban landmark is to be demolished under multi-million pound plans to regenerate Gateshead.

The town's multi-storey car park became famous when it featured in the classic Michael Caine gangster movie, Get Carter. It is now set to be bulldozed alongside the nearby indoor market.

Plans for a new development in Trinity Square including a Tesco store, cafes, restaurants, a cinema and apartments, are to go before the public. The market hall is planned to be vacated at the end of August and the demolition of the car park is set to begin in the Autumn.

Councillor Mick Henry, leader of Gateshead Council, said: "This is a significant step towards the future of Gateshead's centre, we have waited a long time to attract a high quality development in the area."It is unavoidable that regeneration on this scale will mean major changes but without it we could not deliver a modern centre that local people deserve.
