Council's Propose Parking Tax For Employees

Councils across Britain are planning to charge up to £350 a year to let employees park at work instead of introducing congestion charge zones.
The scheme, which is being pioneered by Nottingham City Council, is being considered by eight councils in total, because it is said to be cheaper and easier to administer than congestion charge zones.Estimates suggest it would cost 10% of the amount levied to administer, in contrast to London's congestion charge, which costs 40% of the money levied.
Nottingham City Council is planning to introduce the levy to fund two new tram lines. If the plans are approved, people could end up paying £185 a year for using a car to drive to work. That cost could rise to £350 by 2014.he money raised will reach £12m per year by 2014, which the council says is vital to pay for tram lines two and three, which will run to Clifton and Chilwell, as well as improvements to Nottingham station and bus services.
The Government gave local authorities the power to introduce the tax under the Transport Act 2000 but most still believe that congestion charging was the best way to control rising traffic levels and up until now have not looked towards a parking tax as a solution.
