Heathrow T5 in Numbers

A bit of an anoraks day out, but... when you view the project in figures you have to admit it is quite impressive.

T5 is due to open its doors on 27th March with the arrival of the British Airways flight from Hong Kong

  • £4.3bn project

  • 251 hectare site

  • 400m long undulating single roof with 90m span

  • 131 escalators

  • 175 lifts

  • 18km of conveyor belts

  • 8,000 car park spaces

  • 60 aircraft stands

  • 140 shops

  • 600 bed hotels

  • 8,000 peak workforce

  • 60,000 people involved in the project

  • 6.5million of m3 of earth moved

  • 80,000 tonnes of steel.

  • 20,000 trees

  • 100,000 shrubs
The new airport will increase the capacity for Heathrow to 90million. Whilst this seems an outrageous number of people, it appears that this is not enough and plans are afoot to build T6 on the other side of the motorway. But that is a whole new story..
