Heathrows third runway plans scrapped

Plans for a third runway at London's Heathrow Airport have been scrapped by the new government.

There's been huge debate about it, many homes and schools would have been affected and green groups said it would've been bad for the environment.Former PM Gordon Brown wanted the extra runway as he said it was needed to help with business and trade.But the new government also says it's opposed to any more runways at Gatwick and Stansted airports.

The new runway was first agreed last year, but in March a judge at the High Court said he disagreed with the plans and that they needed a rethink.

Airlines and airport operator BAA argued that a third runway was needed to cope with all the people flying in and out of London.

The news is a relief to people living in the nearby village of Sipson, as their homes would have been demolished to make way for the runway.

Now the new government say they want to improve train connections instead. They're looking to build a high speed rail link between London and Scotland.
