According to city sources it is widely expected that’s house builders George Wimpey and Taylor Woodrow are set to announce a merger.
The combined group would have an expected market capitalisation of about £5billion, which would propel it into the FTSE 100 index of the UK's largest listed companies.
Currently both companies have major operations both in the UK and the US, building over 30,000 houses a year combined, with sales of around £6.8billion.
Reports over the weekend suggest that up to 10 per cent of the combined group's global workforce of 14,000 could be made redundant if the merger takes place as part of a plan to rationalise regional offices
