Glasgow Wins 2014 Commonwealth Games

At a ceremony in Sri Lanka it was announced that Glasgow has won the competition to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games ahead of Abuja in Nigeria.

The Commonwealth Games Council of Scotland says that all new buildings will be constructed so that they can be used by the community after the Games, and it hopes to renew “significant” brownfield sites.

First Minister Alex Salmond, who arrived from Sri Lanka with the bid team, said it had been a "fantastic week" for Glasgow and Scotland. He also said Glasgow now had to work at a "cracking pace" to deliver on its pledge to stage the greatest games the Commonwealth had ever witnessed.
