Council Approves New Tesco Development
Tesco has been given the go ahead by a London council to start its biggest ever housing project.Greenwich Council planning committee voted in favour this week of a 400 million regeneration scheme in Woolwich, which will include 950 homes and a new store. Tesco says the development would be one of Europe's greenest and would create more than 550 jobs.
Nearly 700 of the new homes will be luxury apartments, ranging from one to three-bedroom penthouses. The rest will be low-cost housing.
It is interesting to note that , according to an article in the Daily Mail ,when Tesco bought the site from the Government in 2002, Kingston council said it was "not an appropriate location for major retail development". However since then the Council has now seen the benefits of such a development, which we're told also includes agreement that Tesco build a range of public buildings, including a new nine storey office block with a gallery on the top floor for councillors and officials. We will let you make your own minds up on this one!
